During my Junior Year, I spent my summer in Asia with Athletes in Action as a United States Gymnast and it was there that Deb Bair, showed me the four spiritual laws that had never been clear to me. It was there in California that I came to know that I was eternally secure in my relationship with Jesus Christ and I truly understood my salvation. I realized that my perfectionism could not get me into Heaven, but only by the shed blood of Jesus Christ on the cross could pay for my sins and allow me to be with the Lord in Heaven when I died. By my Senior year I was able to say the words “I love you” which I had never been able to do in my life and I was able to feel Heather’s love break down the walls I had built. It was by then that I truly understood the unconditional love of Jesus Christ through the unconditional love that Heather had given me and her persistence in continuing to love and embrace me even when I pushed her away numerous times. (Perhaps that same drive that makes Heather win Ironman champions is her persistence to stick to things even when the odds seem to be against her! My ultimate goal next would be to find my birthmother and tell her (the woman who rejected me) that I loved her and thank her for choosing life for me.

I graduated Summe Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from Valparaiso University . Heather graduated Cum Laude 3.5/4.0 because I taught her how to study!

I then pursued bodybuilding while preparing to attend Marywood College in Scranton, Pennsylvania. I received a minority scholarship to attend Marywood and was able to pursue a Master’s degree in Sports Nutrition. I wrote all the churches in the area to see about finding housing and the pastor’s wife of Grace Bible Church in Dunmore, PA Ruth Boulet, wrote me and found me a job coaching gymnastics and personal training at the local YMCA and a place to stay. After doing bodybuilding for two years, I felt the Lord was calling me away from the rigid schedule of bodybuilding which often contradicts good nutrition at the cost of ones health many times. Thus, I decided to try Miss Fitness America where perhaps I might be appreciated for my athletic abilities, however to find that even still in this competition often the biggest boobs win. ( Being athletic and lean, even my bust area has no body fat. ) While attending Grace Bible Church, I met my husband, and found we were a wonderful match. We were married in September, 1993. I did my internship at Moses Taylor Hospital and was able to pass the certification exam for my Registered Dietitian license in October 1993 shortly after my husband’s job transferred us to New York.

I became an ACE and ISSA Certified Personal Trainer, and worked at the Hudson Valley Club , now called Sportsplex, as a personal trainer. I ran twelve week nutrition programs for weight loss, became the supervisor of all the trainers and created a Junior American Gladiators camp, based on the popular television series, for over 100 children. That summer of 1994 I tried out for a spot to compete on American Gladiators in Pittsburgh PA ( after driving 8 hours with a terrible cold) and made the final cut of 32 girls out of 10,000 who tried out. I competed in power ball, the wall, whiplash, assault, and many others. I was a gold medal show winner of $2500.
