The Young Athlete: Gymnastics Success!

I was given up for adoption at birth and placed into the home of a loving preacher’s family. Being mulatto (bi-racial), I was considered a hard to place child. My parents chose me and wanted me and at an early age shared with me about my adoption. At age 8, I began to wonder if my own flesh and blood didn’t want me then who did, thus becoming a perfectionist to “earn my keep.” My parents were loving, but I thought that I did not deserve to feel love. I pushed all embraces aside and would not let anyone embrace me. I excelled in academics and quickly became the teacher’s pet with my good grades. Having two brothers, I became a tomboy in order to defend myself. I excelled in every sport I attempted. I started gymnastics at the age of 5 and rose to the top quickly in competitions.

As I went through elementary and middle school, I became addicted to familyMother child embrace television shows. I enjoyed watching Little House on the Prairie, The Waltons, Our House, The Brady Bunch, Leave it to Beaver, and any family show that involved a mother hugging her child. I became engrossed in the show as I could be apart of the love within my mind without feeling threatened. The more I watched these shows the more I began yearning to know who my birthmother was and where I came from. I would lull myself to sleep at night wondering who my birthmother could be; imagining her snuggling me into her arms. I searched everywhere I could to find someone who looked like me. (For many years I wondered if Barbara Mandrell was my birthmother). I wanted to know. I needed to know who I was.
